And how can it help your business?
If you have your own website you may have heard of the term SEO. Or you may be questioning what on earth we are talking about here… SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. And if you’re not on board with it, you may be missing out. Let’s break it down a bit to help you get your head around it, so you can use it to your advantage.
When you Google something, a list of suggestions come up. A few of them at the top may have a small Ad symbol next to them (indicating the business has paid to have their ad come up at the top). The rest have come up “organically”. It’s not left entirely in the hands of Google, these businesses have usually put in time and effort to work themselves towards the top, optimising their sights for search engines to find them and return their site as a result.
So, how can you use SEO to get your business in front of searchers?
Firstly, conduct keyword research to find out what people are searching for. For example, are people searching “Accommodation New Plymouth” or “Motels New Plymouth”. Slight differences in keywords can be the difference between 140 people searching and finding you per month vs 720 per month.
Once these keywords are identified, you need to make sure they feature in your website content. Your headings and paragraphs should include these keywords. So too should your title tag and meta description. These are displayed on search engine results pages as the clickable headline and description for a given result.
There are numerous other factors to SEO, however making these few changes to your site, over time can really make a difference to where you appear in a Google search.
